I don't think having multiple difficulties is a bad thing (though I preferred the older games, where you had a list of goals in each level and the difficulty came from achieving them all including the 'sick' high scores).

I know how to play Tony Hawk, so I'm not a new player who needs some help. Now, to be fair, I've played all the other Tony Hawk games and finished every one except Proving Ground. The game even features BMX riding - something unique to the game - but the absolute deluge of tutorials to teach how to do literally every single grab and flip and slide with the bike feels monotonous and strange even when it IS new stuff. But you really don't seem to need them much - because the game is really, really easy even on the hardest difficulty. What's worse, some of this stuff takes a while to unlock - you can't even do special tricks until halfway into the game. Start up the game's story, jump in and start skating - and you seemingly can't do manuals, reverts, lip tricks, transfers, special moves - any of the things that have become hallmarks of the series. Not only does the game teach you moves one at a time through tutorials, but it also removes these moves from your moveset until you actually learn them. But part of the reason, at least from my experience, may be that the game feels like a tutorial all the way through. There's maybe more to do in American Wasteland than any TH game before it - which is weird, because it seemed less well received. The thing that is really, really striking about the game is the amount of stuff it offers - and how it offers it to you. weird in a Tony Hawk game, where usually you are skating with purpose). It still ends up feeling like individualized levels anyway because you will probably end up taking the bus in the end - the part that bites is not the tunnels connected levels, but that each level is not directly connected to every other one, so you would just have to travel through some of them if you don't ride the bus (which is kind of. Playing it now, they don't really bother me that much, but I guess when it was hyped up as the first "open-world" Tony Hawk game that would be disappointing at the time. It features one big world (Los Angeles) that is made up of separate levels connected by loading tunnels, which were derided when the game came out. I have played Tony Hawk 1-4 especially over and over through the years, but never returned to American Wasteland until now - because I figured it's about time I beat it. All this is to say that I played the game, but didn't stick with it or finish it like I had the others. IIRC it also got less than great reviews because the 360 version was essentially the same as the others - it wasn't greatly improved in any way. I think part of it was that it was the first game to go to the 360 (first next-gen version of a TH at the time), and for some reason even though I owned a 360 I never really got into the game. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland was the first one that didn't grab me, though.

I played all of the original series (THPS1 until Proving Ground) but never touched any of the Robomodo games, and I'm pretty sure that's where most people dropped off too. I don't think this is anything too weird, I think pretty much anybody who was into video games at the time at least played the games even if they didn't love them. I'm almost 30 and I grew up with the Tony Hawk games and played the first 6 games a ton. I've seen a lot of the same games coming up here again and again, and as someone who has been playing a lot of stuff lately that doesn't seem to get talked about as much, I wanted to see what people think of the stuff I've been playing that doesn't seem as popular for discussion.
